As March draws to a close we are starting to wrap up meeting season. The Commission was able to attend many of the County Production Meetings that we help co-sponsor with the local extension offices. It is always great going to county meetings and seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
The National Cotton Council (NCC) was also in GA this past week helping educate farmers about the provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill. Overall we had more than 200 folks attend the 5 meetings across the state. I hope everyone left the meetings more informed and not more confused. The 2014 Farm Bill is much more confusing than the 02 and 08 bills. For cotton, we mainly have to look forward to the implementation of the new STAX program and also the new SCO program. The rest of our traditional program under Title 1 are no longer available for cotton. I’ll be sure to post a good explanation of this in the coming weeks.
We also had the pleasure of attending the GA Dept. of Ag’s (GDA) Auxin-Resistant Crops summit this week. We look forward to continually working with GDA, UGA, and our industry friends to make sure we implement these new technologies in a timely and safe manner. I think the main thing you will start seeing regarding this issue is that stewardship and communication will be key to making this new technology crop system work.
